There’s no better feeling than opening your wardrobe doors to a clean, tidy and organised space. However, if you’re a bit of a clothes hoarder, then decluttering your wardrobe might be quite a big job. Dive in and discover our best tips and tricks for how to organise your wardrobe to leave it looking tidy, ensuring you can always find the outfit you’re looking for!

Clear Out All Of Your Old Clothes

As heartbreaking as it might be, the first step towards organising your wardrobe is to have a huge clearout of your old clothes. Whether it’s that pair of jeans that are two sizes too small, or that jumper you got from your Gran last Christmas - getting rid of clothes that no longer fit or you’ve never worn will clear up space in your wardrobe and make it much easier to organise.

Start by taking all (yes, all!) of your clothes out of your wardrobe and laying them out somewhere so you can go through them one by one. This is the best way to start your wardrobe clearout as it’ll make sure you don’t miss anything out.

Some of the best questions to ask yourself when you’re clearing out clothes are:

  • Does it fit? (If not, get rid of it)
  • Have I worn it in the last 6 months? (No? Say goodbye!)
  • Is it worn/ripped and can’t be fixed? (Yes? Then throw it away!)
  • Does it bring me joy? (If not, don’t keep it!)

You’ve got a few different ways to dispose of clothing after a clearout. From donating them to charity shops to selling them online - giving someone else the chance to benefit from your old clothes is much better than just throwing them all in the bin.

Organise Them into Categories

Whether you organise them by colour or season, putting your clothes back in your wardrobe in some sort of order will make it much easier for you in the future.

We like to organise ours according to each season. On one side of our wardrobe, we’ll have our thick winter jumpers and coats and on the other we’ll have all of our spring/summer wardrobe, ready for the warmer weather.

However, if you’re super organised and want a few more categories to organise your clothes into, these are some of the best:

  • Going out clothes
  • Spring/summer clothes
  • Autumn/winter clothes
  • Work clothes
  • Jeans
  • Loungewear
  • Accessories

By having your clothes organised into different categories, you’ll easily be able to find the exact outfit you’re looking for, making getting ready in the morning a little less stressful.

Get Enough Storage

From hangers and boxes to drawers and shoe racks - there are so many wardrobe storage options available to help you to keep your wardrobe tidy and organised.

If you’ve just got a simple rail in your wardrobe and no space for additional storage, then it’s important to make sure you’ve got plenty of hangers to keep your clothes organised.

Although they’re a little more pricey than other options, wooden hangers are the best option, as they’re super durable and won’t break under the weight of your clothes. They’ll also look great in your wardrobe, adding an extra visual element to your super-organised space.

If you don’t want to fork out lots of money on new wooden hangers, then plastic clothes hangers are a great alternative. The only downside to plastic hangers is that they break and bend quite easily, so aren’t suitable for heavier clothing, such as jeans.

However, you should try and avoid wire hangers where possible, as they can actually damage your clothing, causing them to stretch or become worn, meaning you’ll have even more clothes to throw out next time you organise your wardrobe!

If you’ve got a built-in wardrobe and have got a bit of extra space you should invest in some additional storage. From drawers for your underwear, socks and accessories, to a shoe rack to help you get your shoes in order - there are plenty of budget-friendly wardrobe storage options that will help you to keep your wardrobe looking fresh and organised.

Keep it Fresh

Once you’ve organised your wardrobe, you don’t want to just keep it looking fresh, but smelling fresh, too.

Not only will that ensure your clothes always smell clean when you get them out of your wardrobe, but it’ll make your entire room smell great as well.

A GoSmart Mobile Fragrance Holder is perfect for hanging in your wardrobe to keep it smelling amazing. Just fill it with your favourite SmartScents Sticks (we recommend Sun-Kissed Linen, naturally) and hang it on a hanger or around your clothes rail for a gorgeous burst of fragrance every time you open your wardrobe doors.

Keep it Organised

Once your wardrobe is looking nice and organised, it’s important to keep it that way. After all, you’ve taken the time and effort to do it once, you don’t want to have to do it all again!

A one-in-one-out policy is one of the best ways to keep your wardrobe up to date and organised. So every time you buy a new outfit, you have to throw an old item of clothing away. This helps you to avoid your wardrobe becoming too cluttered and full of clothes you no longer wear.
